AB InBev recently announced that it will be completing its purchase of Craft Brew Alliance, raising it’s stake in the Crafty umbrella company to 100%.
As one of the vanguards of the “crafty-ification” of the craft beer world, Craft Beer Alliance has been a regular subject of this website. To summarize, CBA was created in 2008 as a merger between Redhook Ale Brewery and Widmer Brothers Brewery. They purchased Kona Brewing Company in 2010 and launched Omission Beer in 2012. CBA most recently made news by buying Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Cisco Brewers, and Wynwood Brewing.
After initially forging distribution agreements with the group, AB InBev started building its stake, accruing 32.2% ownership by 2013. An interesting wrinkle in the sale is that AB InBev had recently passed on its contractually stipulated opportunity to complete the buyout for a price of $24.50 a share. In the wake of this no-deal, CBA’s stock price plummeted, allowing AB InBev to swoop back in and complete the buyout for substantially less than they would have paid a few months earlier.
